Cnbc.com - European shares were lower in morning trade on Tuesday with the basic resources sector leading the declines amid a slew of corporate earnings releases.

The Euro Stoxx 600 Index fluctuated at the open but traded lower as the trading session progressed. Mining stocks were the worst performers, despite a promising earnings update from Rio Tinto, with weaker metal prices and selling in China sending the sector lower. Elsewhere, reinsurance Swiss Re fell 10 percent with the company's stock going ex-dividend on Tuesday.
